Normandy

A tour by bike through Normandy is to discover an unspoilt landscape dotted with small farms, each with a cider-apple orchard with cows grazing happily underneath. This is an historic area, home of William the Conqueror, and magnificent fortresses remain in places such as Fougères and Falaise. The Mont St Michel is one of France’s most recognisable symbols. More recently Normandy was the location of the D-Day landings and reminders of the historic events of 1944 abound throughout. No mention of Normandy would be complete without mention of the Suisse Normande (‘Normandy Switzerland’) an area of hills and ravines, and of outstanding beauty. Gastronomically Normandy is an epicurean delight; lamb raised on the salt marshes, cream, apples and of course Calvados, which is sometimes taken in the middle of a meal to create a hole in the stomach so more can be eaten in a tradition known as the trou normande.
