What you can expect
Historic wine chateaux with eye watering price tags and more modest vin de table are often only separated by a few metres. This tour reads like a wine dictionary with both the left and right bank, as well as a trip out to St Emilion and its satellite villages. The last day takes us through the Entre Deux Mers region and past the elusive Chateau d’Yquem, a sweet white wine of legendary status. A gentle tour of beautiful country; although the daily distances are 'medium' the terrain is made for relaxed cycling suitable for all levels of cyclist, with plenty of places to stop along the way and numerous points of interest. 5 days' cycling; 6 nights’ half board with wine, 1 night dinner not include; luggage transport, full back-up and assistance throughout the day.

Itinerary
Day 1
Arrive in Bordeaux, a city which has reinvigorated itself in the past few years and its boulevards are a pleasant place to stroll. It is intimate enough to cover on foot and everywhere are reminders of the town’s status as wine capital of the world. After assembling our bikes and getting ready for setting off tomorrow, we enjoy dinner in this sophisticated city.
Day 2
We leave the city alongside the Garonne river and soon enter the fabled wine lands of the Medoc, passing through all the major appellations such as Margaux and St Julien before staying near Pauillac for the night in a working chateau hotel. Passing such luminous names as Lafite and Latour, you may see the grape harvest in full swing during our September departure. The ‘maison du vin’ in Pauillac gives an insight into the wines of the village and we enjoy a wine tasting at the vineyard right next to the hotel. (68 km / 42 miles).
Day 3
The gentle cycling continues as we explore more vineyards in St Estephe and Lesparre before stopping for lunch on the main street of Pauillac. Continuing past Chateau Latour we then take the ferry across the Gironde to Blaye where we stay in a hotel withy amazing views of the sunset over the river. (63 km / 39 miles).
Day 4
From Blaye we take some really lovely roads through some of the lesser known (but arguably better value!) appellations of Blaye and the Cotes de Bourg. It’s slightly hillier on this side of the river but by no means hard cycling. Leaving here we enter Pomerol, home of Chateau Petrus, and continue past Cheval Blanc and Chateau Figeac to St Emilion, a beautiful town of red tiled houses and a church built into the rock. With Roman origins, this is one of the prettiest towns in France. For those interested the ecole du vin runs a short two hour course on the basics of wine tasting. (68 km / 42 miles).
Day 5
We begin with a round trip tour of the satellite villages of St Emilion such as St Georges, Montagne and Puisseguin. There are a few hills but the places you pass most certainly make it worth it; there are some very lovely villages and some fine views. We cross the Dordogne at Castillon, following the river for a few miles, and continue via quiet lanes to our destination for the night at Cadillac, on the river Garonne. (66 km / 41 miles).
Day 6
The last day in the saddle takes us through the vineyards of the sweet white dessert wines, through Barsac and on to Sauternes where Chateau d’Yquem is passed. There is every chance they may be harvesting here during our September / October departure; every grape is picked by hand and they make multiple trips through the vines to pluck each one at the optimum moment. The mist which causes the ‘noble rot’ may well still be in the air, making this an evocative scene. In the village of Sauternes itself there is an opportunity to try the wines of the area. After this it’s time to head back to Bordeaux following the direction of the river with frequent glimpses of it. (76 km / 47 miles).
