Last week we were in the Champagne region finalising our new route. It is a beautiful area with not only plenty of vines, but some lovely rolling open countryside interspersed with broad-leaf woodland. In the autumn it looked wonderful with the colours turning.
This round trip itinerary from Reims takes you in an anti-clockwise loop and visits some well known but lesser frequented towns of the area for our overnight stops. Soissons, Epernay and Chalons are all beautiful and each has a distinctive character, making a tour of variety and interest. Included in either Reims or Epernay is a cellar tour of one of the big champagne houses such as Moet or Mumm; the chance to see the undergtound cellars is followed, naturally, by a tasting of the golden elixir pioneered by Dom Perignon (whose tomb you can also visit).
